A mixed bag of results this week. For our Mens Premier Division and Under 19.5s Division One teams, after undefeated premierships last year, the long winning streaks came to an end. But our Womens Premier Division recorded their first ever win against Manly.

Our enormous numbers have seen us field new teams; we have a total of 14 this year. Seven divisional games back to back at Gore Hill on Saturday, including some big wins. Mens Division One had the bye; but of the 13 teams that played, nine of them took out the chocolates.

MENS

After an unbeaten season last season, our winning streak in Mens Premier Division came to an end at Weldon Oval with a 66-point loss to Manly. Several key withdrawals saw our side short of full strength; and against Manly it left a hole. Ned Campbell, Ethan Grace and Mitch Rogers worked hard, but it wasn’t our day.

Division Two were in night-time action at Gore Hill. The start of the match was delayed after the Gore Hill Oval went out; but when the lights were switched back on, it was a dark night for the Blues as the Bombers dominated from start to finish to run out convincing 147-point winners. Nick Lo Surdo, Alex Vidot-Coleman and Jack Dillon were the standouts, but there were so many Bombers who played their roles to perfection on a day when no less than 14 players scored goals.

Division Three also enjoyed a first-up win. Taking on Camden at Gore Hill, our Bombers barely raised a sweat as they held the Cats to a single goal in a comfortable 51-point win.  James Weiling, James Hunt and William Baily figured prominently for the Bombers as they got the Div 3 season off to a flying start.

It was a similar story for Division Four, as they made light work of Western Magic at Gore Hill, powering away to a 106-point first-up win. Ed Taffa was an unstoppable force up forward to finish with five goals; and along with James Nettle and Liam Blanch was among the Bombers’ best. It was a comprehensive result that sees the Bombers get the season off to a flying start.

Division Five is split into two conferences this season, and we have a team in each. In the North-West conference, it was a tough draw to open the season against Parramatta. In a low-scoring contest, James Debney, Sam Nicholl and Gus Stone-Heash performed strongly; but unfortunately we weren’t able to get the goals when needed and went down by 29 points.

In the City-South conference, it was one-way traffic as the Bombers controlled proceedings from the start; and the Students were kept scoreless until the last minute of the game. In the end, it was a comfortable 82-point win. Ben Lamb kicked four goals in a best-on-ground performance, while Alex Frellinger and Gordon Smith were also in the thick of the action all morning.

Like Mens Prems, the Under 19.5s Division One team was coming off an unbeaten season in 2024, but suffered a loss at Weldon Oval. They created chances but weren’t able to make them count, and with some key absences were unable to get past Manly. Cooper Clarke, Nate Howson and Henry Charles kept working hard, but it wasn’t our day and the Bombers never looked like getting up.

Under 19.5s Division Two got their season off to a flying start with a 40-point win over Manly at Weldon Oval. It was low-scoring and tight for three quarters, but six unanswered goals in the last quarter wrapped up a strong win. Sam Jackson spearheaded the charge with five goals; while Conall Molloy, Jackson and James Pocknee were the Bombers’ best.

WOMENS

A historic day for our Womens Premier Division team, as they knocked off Manly for the first time ever. Doing it in style as they led all the way through and closed it out to record a comfortable 32-point margin. Adrienne Keeffe had another productive day up forward to land four goals; while Lucy Yates, Sophie Kavanagh and Charlotte White were prolific ball-winners around the ground.

Also tasting the spoils of victory at Weldon Oval was Division One. In a low-scoring contest under lights, the class of Grace Thomas, Marlee Barnet-Hepples and Liv O’Donnell was the difference. The Bombers defended magnificently, holding the Wolves out time and again and denying them any opportunities.

Division Two travelled to David Phillips Oval to take on UNSW-ES, and returned victorious after controlling play to record a 29-point win. Lauren Crawford, Charlotte Kearney and Olivia Law were in the thick of the action for the Bombers as they got on top early and refused to let the Bulldogs back into the contest.

Division Three took on Western Magic at Gore Hill. With a young team, quite a few of them playing their first competitive game of footy, it was a learning experience and they put in a strong defensive effort under pressure. It wasn’t enough to get the win, but a solid start to the season. Uma van Egmond-Jones, Alice Perkes and Rebecca van Gelder were prominent performers for the Bombers.

An explosive opening quarter was enough to get the Under 20s their second win of the season. Six unanswered goals built up a lead that UTS were never going to run down; and although it was a low-scoring contest for the last three quarters, the Bombers had enough of a lead that they were never going to lose from there. Willow Orsini, Isobel Edmunds and Heidi Charles were the standouts as the Bombers retained the ladder leadership.
