Saturday was wet and cold, with brief bursts of sunshine interspersed with stormy conditions. And although the surface at Gore Hill was ideal for Divvi Day, with seven games going ahead; it wasn’t so good on the road. Picken Oval was very heavy for the three Mens matches including Premier Division; while away games at Bat & Ball were called off.

But it was a successful day for North Shore. Of the 11 games that went ahead, eight of them resulted in North Shore wins. Womens Premier Division had the bye, with Mens staying on top of the ladder.

Two rounds to go till the finals, and North Shore are well placed to be represented in most grades when the business end of the season comes around. Of our 14 teams, 10 are now sure of playing in finals, while another is in the top four but not yet mathematically guaranteed.

MENS

Premier Division had few worries in getting past Inner West Magpies on a heavy track at Picken Oval. Four goals to one in the first quarter set the tone for the day, with a six-goal run in the third quarter being the icing on the cake. Ned Campbell, Cooper Donald and Matt Wilson were influential for the Bombers as they expanded their percentage gap at the top of the ladder; and with just two rounds to go before the finals, wins in those games should be enough to wrap up the minor premiership.

Division One had a big win at Picken Oval, holding the Magpies to a single behind. The conditions were difficult, but the Bombers were untroubled in getting past a struggling Magpies side. Tom Gillis landed four goals; while Hugo Thew, Joel Hennessy and Harry Barnum were under every pack in the muddy conditions. It’s a very tight battle for top spot, with four clubs in the mix; but holding the Magpies to one behind has strengthened the percentage gap on top.

Division Two were playing the late game at Gore Hill, in driving rain against Manly’s reserves. It was a tough draw, but the Bombers took the fight up to the Wolves; and when the Bombers goaled midway through the last quarter the margin was back within a kick. But the winning goal would not come, the Bombers falling just six points short. Sam Hayres, Nic Gallu and Evan Ausling played solid games in a good fighting effort by the Bombers.

After receiving forfeit wins in the last two weeks, it was good for Division Three to get on the field this week as they took on Balmain at Gore Hill. Six unanswered goals set up a handy break, and the Bombers were never threatened. A late flurry completed a 76-point win; with Tyson McCallum landing 11 goals in a best-on-ground performance while James Hunt and Jacob Molkentin also were in the thick of the action.

Division Four retained top spot on the ladder with a 31-point win over Manly at Gore Hill. The Wolves kicked the only three goals of the first quarter, but would not score another for the game; as the Bombers took the lead at finished full of running. Liam Blanch, Tom Gorman and Sempatike Kwizera were key performers in another impressive display of Bombers footy.

A heart-breaker for Division Five North-West against Manly at Gore Hill. The lead see-sawed through the first half, but the Wolves got out to a 14-point lead in the third term. But the Bombers weren’t finished yet, scoring the only two goals of the last quarter to get back to a one-point margin. But were unable to find the winning goal in the dying moments; going down by the narrowest of margins. Spencer & Lachlan McIntosh and James Roffe were everywhere in a cliff-hanger that left the Bombers so agonisingly short.

Division Five City-South are finals-bound after a 40-point win over Balmain at Gore Hill. Six straight goals set up a handy buffer, but the goal-kicking radar went awry for two quarters and North Shore’s next 14 scoring shots were behinds. But a late surge ensured the game was safe and the Tigers never looked like getting back into the game. Nick McLachlan, Richard Vincent and Ben Maxwell were magnificent for the Bombers.

Under 19.5s Division One remain on top spot after an easy 82-point win in the slush at Picken Oval. The Bombers burst out of the blocks with four goals in the first quarter while keeping the Magpies scoreless, and there was no way for the home side to get back into the contest. Billy Sykes, Harry Layet and Henry Charles were ball magnets as the Bombers put on another impressive display, and the momentum of the premiership defence continues.

WOMENS

It was a challenging fixture for Division Two, as they travelled to Waratah Oval to take on ladder leaders Southern Power. In tricky conditions, the Bombers defended resolutely and held the Power to four goals. But reward for effort did not come on the scoreboard, as the Bombers were unable to score a goal. It was a valiant effort against the odds, but not enough to take the points.

Division Three had their best game for the season, as they took care of UTS by 38 points in the early game at Gore Hill. The Bats scored two goals early, but the Bombers tightened in defence and the Bats would not score again for the day. North Shore took the lead in the second quarter; and with the sniff of victory in their nostrils weren’t letting go. Emma Greene, Alex Prentice and Hannah Maher were influential as the Bombers took out a well-earned win.

Under 20s will be playing in the Major Semi-Final, and their finals preparations suffered no harm at all when they dominated UTS from start to finish at Gore Hill. The defence held firm, holding the Bats to a single behind as the Bombers completed a 104-point win. Lauren O’Sullivan scored seven goals and Immy Hungerford four; while Willow Orsini was in the thick of the action around the ground. It was an impressive performance from a team on the way up.
