A cold and wet Back to Bears Day on Saturday was a great success at Gore Hill; and it was an enjoyable experience to welcome greats of seasons past back to the club. Plenty of success on the field, with both Premier Division teams along with Mens Division and and Under 19.5s Division One enjoying big wins over Sydney Uni.

The wet weather played havoc with the away fixturing, with only two of our away games going ahead; Mens Division Five City-South going down fighting in Camden while Womens Under 20s wrapped up a top-two finish with a win over UNSW-ES.

MENS

With a large and vocal crowd including many North Shore legends of the past looking on, the Bombers of today got off to a flyer against Sydney Uni. Six goals to two in the first quarter set the tone for the day, as the Bombers were in complete control throughout. Small forwards Max Thomas and Max Yeoland were unstoppable as they helped themselves to four goals apiece. In every quarter the lead increased; with the final winning margin reaching 104 points. Ned Campbell, Max Yeoland and Jake Veale were everywhere around the ground as the Bombers once again displayed their premiership credentials.

Division One also did it in style against Sydney Uni. Getting off to a quick start, the Bombers extended themselves to a 24 point lead at the long break. If that wasn’t enough, they tightened the screws after half time and the Students were unable to score a goal in the second half. In the end, a 55-point win maintained top spot on the ladder. Lachy Gedge, Sam Ausin and Nick Hill were best in another outstanding Bomber performance.

While other grades were called off in wet conditions, Division Five City-South got on the field against Camden at Fairfax Reserve. It was a tough game for our Sevenths, and although the fight was there, the results on the scoreboard didn’t go our way and we went down by 58 points. James Roffe, Ed Carvalho and Billy Elsum were best for the Bombers on a tough away trip.

Under 19.5s Division One maintained top spot on the ladder with a 20-point win over Sydney Uni at Gore Hill. In a low-scoring defensive battle, the Bombers were able to find enough goals to get out to a lead and deny the Students any possibility of getting back into the contest. Lewis Whiley, Felix McIntosh and Henry Charles were magnificent for the Bombers in what was a solid team effort to further bolster the Bombers’ finals position.

WOMENS

Premier Division on Back to Bears Day was a night fixture, commencing in driving rain. Two unanswered goals in  the opening term gave the Bombers the lead, and the Students were never able to regain the initiative. In the end it was a comfortable 21-point win; with Izzy McLeay, Lucy Yates and Charli Tidemann featuring prominently. The result maintains top spot on the ladder, heading into the bye next week.

Under 20s got on for an early game at Henson Park against UNSW-ES, but were in trouble early as the Bulldogs scored three early goals. But the Bombers got two goals back before quarter time. Hitting the front in the third quarter, the Bombers went on with the job to record an 11-point win. Samia Chrara, Lauren O’Sullivan and Erica Blazey were outstanding for the Bombers in a result that ensured a double-chance finals position in the final four.
