Round 14 saw North Shore move to the top of the ladder in both Mens & Womens Premier Division competitions after wins over Manly at the Goretress. This week we’ll be looking to defend top spot in both competitions in front of Bombers past and present as we will celebrate Back to Bears Day at Gore Hill.

13 of our teams were fixtured to play, with Mens Division Three getting up without firing a shot after St George forfeited at the last moment. Several tough games for our divisional teams; but we are well placed as we move into August with four rounds to go.

MENS

A triumph for Premier Division as they moved to the top of the ladder, doing it in style with a 64-point win over Manly at Gore Hill. The Bombers extended their lead every quarter, keeping it tight in defence and ensuring there was no way for the Wolves to get back into the contest. Ned Campbell, Harry Walker and Fraser Thurlow were standouts in an outstanding performance. It’s going to be tight percentage-wise for the remainder of the season; but we have a good chance for the minor premiership.

The draw wasn’t kind to Division Two, sending them to Greygums for the second time in a few weeks. The game was close for three quarters, and there was only 11 points in it at the last change. But with the game in the balance, the Bombers weren’t able to get the job done in the last quarter as the Rams landed seven unanswered goals. Joe Maguire, Seb Krimmer and Toby Bartrop worked hard, but it wasn’t our day.

Division Four remain top of the ladder, doing it in style with five unanswered goals in the first quarter to set up a lead that Western Magic were never going to overcome. From there, it was a cruise to a comfortable 50-point win. Jackson Capp added four goals to his season tally; while Alex de Laine, Sam Nicholl and Liam Blanch were in everything around the ground in another impressive Bomber performance on the road.

Division Five North-West went down on the road to Parramatta by 57 points. The first half was a low-scoring slog, but unfortunately the Bombers weren’t able to pick up the pace when the Goannas got on top in the third quarter. Wade Dower, Spencer McIntosh and Sam Steinberg battled hard, but it wasn’t enough to challenge for the competition points.

Division Five City-South, playing at Gore Hill immediately after the Premier Division match, had little trouble in getting past Newtown in recording a 65-point win. The Breakaways were held to a single goal as the Bombers controlled proceedings from start to finish. Zac Gnaden, Liam Ireland and James Roffe featured prominently in a solid all-round Bomber performance.

Top spot was on the line in Under 19.5s Division One, and the Bombers passed the test. Five goals in the first quarter established a lead that the Wolves never looked like bridging; and from there the Bombers went on to record a 33-point win. Lewis Whiley, Jarvis Hemmings and Hugo Brasher were superb as the Bombers maintained top spot on the ladder.

Under 19.5s Division Two went down to Manly by 18 points, but remain top of the table. Playing in the early game at Gore Hill, the Bombers conceded four goals to one in the opening term and were unable to make up the deficit. With several players saving themselves as they were to double up in later games, Zac Duane, Elias Saffioti and Felix McIntosh kept working hard; but the Bombers were unable to take the points this time.

WOMENS

Premier Division took top spot on the ladder in a heart-stopper at Gore Hill. It was tight and low scoring all day, the lead changing hands several times. But the Bombers kicked the only goal of the final quarter to take the lead and defended grimly through the tense final minutes to get the job done. Liv Edwards, Liz Yates and Grace Hill were superb in an outstanding display, getting the Bombers over the line in a thriller.

It was a heart-breaker for Division One against Manly at Gore Hill. The Bombers got on top in the second quarter, and led by 15 points midway through the last quarter. But the Wolves scored three late goals to pip the Bombers at the post. Lili Kablau, Grace Thomas and Cordelia McLeay were prominent performers; but the Bombers will rue one that got away.

Away days for Division Two at Olds Park against St George. The Bombers, still short of full strength, were in an arm wrestle against the Dragons, with the lead changing hands several times. The Bombers led by five points at the last change; but the Dragons kicked the only two goals of the last quarter. Bri Gorman, Jasmine Wong and Viv Leong kept working hard; but the win was not to be.

Division Three had a tough road trip against Western Magic at Wrights Reserve. Short on numbers, with several players doubling up from other games, it was a difficult assignment against the Magic’s only team. The Bombers were unable to score; despite sterling efforts from Ella Forrest, Tamara Wightman and Hannah Maher. It’s a learning process, and there/s much to be learned from games like this.

Blustery winds made conditions difficult at Weldon Oval for the Under 20s match. Neither team was able to score a goal in the first half; but unfortunately the Wolves landed three in the third term to put the game out of the Bombers’ reach. Avalon Tucker, India Gilbert and Phoebe Barry battled tirelessly; but it wasn’t enough to get the points.
