On the weekend Savannah Newton (13) and Charlotte Day (14) were the stars of the day out at BISP.
Peter Newton, Savannah’s dad, plays for North Shore and had arranged for the two girls, both very keen umpires, to umpire the men’s div 3/4 practice match on Saturday morning (see picture).
They both worked hard and did a great job. So much so that when we were short of umpires for the men’s div 1/2 practise match we asked Savannah, Charlotte and Savannah’s parents if they were interested in helping us out for a bit with that game.
Savannah’s response was something like “Yes please!! I absolutely love it!!!” and both were very keen.
Despite the quicker game, the girls again did a fantastic job and from our vantage point, umpired the game as well as we’ve seen. At the end of the game it was 33 degrees and they were dripping with sweat, but still smiling.

“They didn’t miss a call” was the feedback we received.
Giles Coloe had volunteered to go out and take up some of the umpiring, but he was sent back as not required – very funny!!
Their enthusiasm made our day and no doubt they’re both umpiring stars of the future.
